IT’S TIME TO DO SOMETHING
I like to end my evenings watching AC360 (I tape it when I’m not home). I enjoy Anderson Cooper’s passion for news, his communication style and he’s just so adorable. But it’s been difficult for me to watch the show so far this week. Actually, I turned the channel on Monday and Tuesday after breaking down in tears.
Anderson is reporting live from Somalia, where tens of thousands of children have died during the past weeks from starvation. Anderson is there along with Dr. Sanjay Gupta, reporting from refuge camps bringing much needed attention to this African crisis. What forced me to turn was seeing the little emaciated faces of the tiny malnourished children there, often covered with flies as well as helpless looks of desperation. My eyes are filling with tears as I describe what I saw.
But tonight I watched, because I have to. I have to take in as much information about the crisis in Somalia so I can do something. I actually did do a story during my segment last week on this crisis, but that is not enough. I have been tweeting news reports about the crisis, but that is not enough. I need to do more. But what difference can one woman make? Let’s see.
My first step is to go to Bono’s relief organization called One. I signed up and it instructed me to share this email with my friends:
Subject: Join me in the fight against extreme poverty
Hi,
I’ve just signed up to ONE and the fight against extreme poverty. I’d like you to join me.
By supporting ONE, you have the opportunity to take action to support effective, proven initiatives that are delivering results in the poorest places on the planet: protecting families from preventable diseases like AIDS and malaria, putting children in school, providing economic opportunity and stabilizing communities.
Join me and millions of people around the world who believe that where you live shouldn’t determine whether you live:

Together as ONE we can make a difference!
Thanks!
I know there is not a lot of trust out there for organizations that claim to help people in need, especially after what we saw in the aftermath of hurricane Katrina. Honestly, that has made me hesitant to contribute to relief efforts after many recent disasters. But I realize now that I am just making excuses and being lazy. The more I do my homework, the easier it will be to find legitimate groups. And even if I am wrong, and the organization I choose turns out to be a sham, I should find another. The important thing is to do something… to try to make a difference and be part of the solution.
Based on my research Bono’s One is legit. So that is where I am starting. Now let’s see how many of my friends, family members, social networking friends I can convince to do something.
